I paid my deposit down at the St. Louis Boat show back in Feb. of 04.  Bud Dickson of Canoe Canada Outfitters, had a booth at the show & offered all kinds of fishing trips, bear hunts and moose hunts.

I had also talked to another friend of mine, Larry Woodard and Larry said this place(Canoe Canada Outfitters) was a sleeper.   I had hunted there for moose before and was successful with a 32-inch bull, not a trophy by any means but a Bull Moose with a bow! I wanted a 50-inch Bull, however since I had never shot a bull moose before with a bow and I know the meat is excellent I took the shot. It’s not wise to pass up a shot with a bow as it really isn’t that easy to harvest a bull. The country is rough, wet, boggy, and the weather changes daily.

IMPERIAL - Members of the Windsor High School Band joined with their families and friends to raise $4,000 in a recent "Walk-a-Jog-a-Thon" that will benefit diabetic children halfway around the world in the country of Georgia.

Band Director Nate Wisdom, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13, said he benefited in his youth from attending Camp Hickory Hill, a summer diabetic education camp near Columbia led by University of Missouri endocrinologist Dr. Ron James. In 2007, Wisdom decided to organize a fundraising effort to help a similar camp in Georgia, a former Soviet republic.

Elking It for Independence Day

The smell of burnt fuses. The atmosphere of danger. Explosives and our celebration of Independence. The personification of rebellion and success. To some, even excess. This year I’m holding my wallet a little closer. My apologies to all of the fireworks vendors and suppliers. I just can’t see $5 bills going bang in my yard this year or watching as $15 and $20 mortar rounds explode a hundred feet above my home.

This year my family opted to watch someone else burn money. I find the community fireworks display a comfortable compromise of conscience.

Walking into Kimmswick from the parking area just outside of the business district, the first booth to greet visitors was a petting zoo, complete with a camel.  There were barbeque stands, drink vendors, and a vast spread of tented arts and craft vendors.  Thunder rolled and no one seemed to notice.  In spite of the on-and-off rain on Sunday, the festival retained a large attendance.

The Scribe would like to thank life-long Jefferson County resident, Nelson Sherrer for sharing three bow-hunting stories.  This is the first of four installments of the stories, to be followed by a bear hunt story and a moose hunt story in two parts.

Well here we are again another deer season approaching and I can’t wait! It is the end of August of 2006 and September 15 Archery season opens in Missouri for the Whitetail Deer. I am going Elk hunting with Shaw Grisby, Mike Kahert and Randy Mills the third week of September and I am already planning for my White Tail Deer hunt in Northern Missouri on one of my farms. Its not that I don’t really enjoy Elk hunting with a bow but nothing is as rewarding as harvesting a Whitetail Deer, Doe, Button Buck or Antlered Buck, any Whitetail Deer with a bow is a rewarding experience. When you hunt Elk you are calling them in with a bugle or you may be stalking them on foot walking endless hours just to get within 40 yards of a 600-pound animal.
