Jack Ginnever speaks fondly of his historic Crystal City home.  When Ginnever moved here, he envisioned Crystal City as a place he could retire someday.  He now runs for mayor hoping to transform how the city handles everything from water billing to council meetings, and he believes the city desperately needs to update its 41-year-old Master Plan. . .

Well into it's second year, the Art Walk in Ste Genevieve is growing and getting better, month after month.  This month, on Friday, February 26 from 6 to 9 p.m., thirteen art studios and galleries are welcoming art lovers during the city's twentieth monthly Art Walk.
 
The newest additions to the Art Walk, the Linden House and the LeMeilleur House Gallery, are colonial houses owned and managed by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.  This month, those spaces are featuring the art of Grant Kniffen.  Kniffen, an art teacher and track coach. . .

US Rep. Russ Carnahan, Rick LuxThe road into Pace Construction Company’s asphalt plant in Antonia leads through a man-made canyon that emerges into a breathtaking quarry.  Snow paints patches of the rocky landscape.  Cliffs dwarf enormous yellow dump trucks and heavy equipment, which in turn dwarf SUV’s and people. Future generations might someday treat this place like a natural wonder.  Monday Feb. 15, US Rep. Russ Carnahan toured the Antonia plant.  Pace employees and representatives from Innoventor, Inc. spoke with the congressman about their progress developing a new type of asphalt binder that recycles swine manure. . .

A group of fifteen people gathered in the conference room at Windsor Branch Library Wednesday evening to meet Richard Blowers, the Constitution Party’s candidate for Dist. 102 State Rep.  Acting Jefferson County Chairman Nick Ivanovich opened the meeting with words about political issues and introduced Blowers. 

     “We’re all aware that we are where we are today because our elected representatives put us here,” Ivanovich said.

I listen to Johnny Ames, whose name has been changed in response to his request for anonymity, as he darts from one topic to another in the same random way that a grasshopper goes from point A – to - Y- to - G- covering a vast expanse of grass blades.  An hour into our conversation, he completes the thought he started fifteen topics ago.  We laugh together about how it takes three hours to have a ten-minute chat.

     A couple of weeks ago I posted some tools for sale on Craigslist including a pneumatic flooring nail gun.  After lots of market-style price haggling and numerous no-shows, I was thrilled when someone offered to pay full price and requested that I ship the nail gun.  The following is my personal account of someone’s attempt to con me out of $1,200 in a scheme commonly known as the “Nigerian Check Scam.”
