On Saturday September 4th, candidates, members and supporters of the Constitution Party stood at the corner of Truman and Hwy A in Festus holding signs and flags and encouraging drivers to honk in support. One in a series of what they’re calling “Freedom Rallies,” the Festus event focused on the theme of international banking, unconstitutional spending, and the 1930’s suspension of the gold standard.
Cindy Redburn, Secretary for the Constitution Party of Missouri, thinks that a return to the gold standard would stabilize the economy. Congress, she said, has the power to coin and regulate money, but that the constitution calls for coining only silver and gold.
“It’s not paper money, fiat money,” Redburn said. “Everybody recognizes the dollar bill as legal tender. I give you $10 to pay you for my grocery bill, you take that money from me and it’s all a good faith trade. But in reality there is nothing of substance backing that, but the faith and credit of the United States, and people are starting to get worried about the faith and the credit of the United States. When we had the silver and gold standard, our paper money was backed by that. If you had a $10 bill, you could go to the bank and get $10 of gold or silver.”
Redburn also worries about unfunded liabilities. The Constitution Party, she said, would implement a plan to gradually withdraw from programs like Medicare and Social Security, paying those that have paid into the programs.
“We are in such an economic bind right now that you are either looking at a long, long term depression which is what we’re heading for if not economic collapse,” Redburn said. “Somewhere we have to get off of this boat, but getting off is hard too. The pain of getting off is a lot less than the pain of continuing the way we’re going.”
Nick Ivanovich, candidate for Dist. Three US Rep criticized free trade policies.
“When they passed free trade for China and saw in the stores 40 percent, 50 percent made in China products, why didn’t they change directions and policies?” Ivanovich said. “Why did they let it keep going until it got to be almost a hundred percent, if they were really concerned about debt? So free trade has been a total failure and has de-industrialized this country.
Constitution Party Candidate for State Rep. Dist. 102, Richard Blowers expressed concern that excess spending and debt would lead to catastrophe.
“No other country has done what America is doing right now and pulled it out and turned it around,” Blowers said. “Government can’t continue to hire people. That’s the only job aspect right now that’s growing. Government jobs don’t produce anything. They are actually a drain on the economy because you have to pay for those jobs with tax dollars. You don’t pay for them with earned money like a business does.”
Redburn believes that the party has a feasible plan to turn around the economy, albeit a difficult one.
“The Constitution Party is the only party that has a plan that could even attempt to do that because we believe once you stop unconstitutional spending, then you’re going to have money to take care of the liabilities that we’re facing,” Redburn said.
The Constitution Party’s next rally will focus on the Bill of Rights this Saturday in St. Louis County at the corner of Lindbergh and Union. Further information is available at www.constitutionpartymo.org.
