A couple of weeks ago I posted some tools for sale on Craigslist including a pneumatic flooring nail gun.  After lots of market-style price haggling and numerous no-shows, I was thrilled when someone offered to pay full price and requested that I ship the nail gun.  The following is my personal account of someone’s attempt to con me out of $1,200 in a scheme commonly known as the “Nigerian Check Scam.”

Lisa Hill is one of 18 volunteers who attended an Organizing for America meeting hosted by OFA Regional Field director, Kyle Juvers at the Arnold Branch Jefferson County Library on Saturday, September 12.  Hill’s son Adam, now 18, was diagnosed with leukemia at age seven.  He recovered, but last year he was diagnosed with epilepsy.  Frequent calls from the school nurse forced Hill to leave her job.  Her husband is a business owner, a union plumbing contractor, and since most of his employees get their insurance through their union, he can’t buy group health insurance reasonably for his business.

Hill currently insures her family through COBRA, but she says that will run out in June of 2010.  She worries that her son won’t be able to buy insurance as an individual, and that his health will limit his work options.

Like many people on all sides of the healthcare reform debate, Hill believes that most people are vulnerable under current healthcare policies.  “If you lose your job, you’re going to lose your healthcare,” she says.  “COBRA extends 18 months.  That’s it – if you can afford it.”

Why do we need an Online News Site for Jefferson County?

Deborah Sleeper / Editor Jefferson County Scribe            First of all, we’re not here to replace any existing media in Jefferson County. Honestly, I think the Jefferson County Leader does a pretty good job of comprehensive weekly local coverage. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Suburban Journals cover the whole St. Louis metro area. Our primary purpose here is to fill a gap, and offer online news and resources focused on Jefferson County.

Online news offers readers a few distinct advantages. First and foremost, the content is available to you when and where you want it. You choose whether to read it at your desk, take it with you on a laptop or other electronic device, or you can selectively paper-print what you choose. Secondly, you can access our stories whenever you’d like. Check daily or weekly for updates, and if a month or a year from now you’d like to look back over an article, the archives will still be here. No piles of paper, just clean, efficient, environmentally-friendly e-files.

There are multi-media advantages to online news as well. Whereas most of our stories will include text and photos, just like you find in print periodicals, sometimes our site will include audio and video. It’s all about bringing you the story in its best possible format.

Furthermore, without print layout deadlines, content updates can happen when they’re most appropriate. In print publications, frequently obituaries appear after the funeral. With online publishing, we’ll be able to bring such time-sensitive information to you right away, whereas feature stories and more timeless content will be added weekly, monthly and seasonally.

Another advantage to online publication is word count. Stories and articles will be just as long or as short as their subjects dictate. Writers are free to include what’s important or interesting, leave out what isn’t, and express it in whatever way best fits the topic, not the column inches.

Of course we all like FREE stuff, too, and the lower cost of online publishing when compared to paper printing and delivery allows us to bring you a lot of freebies:
  • Free classified ads  ( Click Here )
  • Free business directory listings ( Click Here )
  • Free calendar listings ( Click Here )
  • Free obituary publication
  • Free birth, birthday, engagement, wedding and anniversary announcements
  • Everything is free to readers, no postage or delivery fees, no matter where you are! All you need is online access.

Our low publication costs translate to affordable ad rates for local businesses, too.   If you own a small business or you’re self-employed, you know how expensive it can be to get the word out about the products and services you offer. For a fraction of the cost of print advertising, you can reach customers, and even small ads can link readers to more detailed information, such as your business directory listing, a page of coupons, or even your own website.

We intend to bring you news, events and stories that are all local and relevant to Jefferson County. This is all about our community. The only exceptions we foresee to a direct connection between our stories and Jefferson County will be in the travel section, and even there, most travel stories will focus on the Show-Me state.

Finally, we would like to focus on YOU, members of our local community. Please take advantage of our free membership, and let us know what’s important to you!

Sincerely,

Deborah Sleeper
